They did not show any reaction to the protest of the workers. The union of the labors decided not to work anymore in the company. Steve Martha the executive manager was passive to the situation. He was not ready to listen to the labors. He was neutral to their demands. They landed up in strikes and rallies in front of the gate of the factory. The managing director of the company, Mr. Nejm Abdul El Amir Rasol took notice of the situation and he intervened into the matter much later. He considered this industrial crisis to be solved and he took initiative to pay attention to the needs of the demands of the workers. The further problem that arises immediately was the take over the company. The arc shoe manufacturers collaborated with the other shoe manufacturers of Egypt. The labors were not given the ultimatum of the same and they were all of a sudden asked to find another job (Jrgensen, Knud Erik). They were not given any other placement and morally it was not justified. The labors landed up in strikes and they opposed to work. This continued till few months. The stakeholders of th e company looked onto the matter and they resolved the situation. In case of the first situation the managing director solved the situation by conducting a personal meeting of the labor with the executive manager and an apology was asked to the labor for the verbal abuse that he faced. The pluralist theory has been applied here where the perspective of the labors and the unions have been focused on (Smith, et al). Main players in this issue The main players in this issue are the labors and the managing bodies against whom the situation has taken place. The initial crisis has taken place because of the executive manger who verbally abused the factory worker (Jackson, Robert and Georg Srensen). While the company was taken over by other shoe manufacturing company it was the people in the managing committee and the factory workers who were the main players. The managing director has played a major role in this by intervening and solving the problem Therefore he is another player in this situation. Al the players had a major role to play in this. All the players had their own perspectives and own point of view (Ferguson, Yale). Two main players (actors) The players are also known as actors in this situation. The actors have a major role to play in these situations. The situations are equivalent to crisis here. The most highlighted actors here are the labor who was abused and the executive who abused him. The situation is in favor of the labor. The crisis can be termed as the crisis in terms of industrial relations. The crisis has occurred in case of the industrial relations. The labor represented the entire workers of the factory as this same incident could happen to the labors in the future. Another reason behind this was the same class that the workers belonged in. The executive manager had the power to manage and take the initial decision regarding the factory. This is the reason the labor was dominated and he was penalized (Dunne, et al). The labor however was restored his job back with complete honor. Apart from this it was same in the case of shutting down of the factory and the takeover of the same by other company. The share holders made the decision without giving prior notice to the workers. The labors were the biggest sufferers in this case. The important actors in this case were the shareholders and the workers. The ultimate sufferers of the situation were the labors and the reason of their sufferings was the stakeholders of the company. However the actors that are to be highlighted are the labor that was unethically treated and the manger that was the reason behind it. This crisis was more unethical and a more important issue than the other issues (Dunne, et al). The reaction of the two actors in respect to the situations The labor refused and he protested against the situation. The executive manger who was accused reacted in a neutral manner towards the situation. The labor made hard efforts to prove himself innocent as he was wrongly charged and was accused in front of all the entire factory workers. Moreover he was charged for something that he has not done. The entire labor union went against the authorities (Booth, Ken and Toni Erskine). The reaction of the labor was expressed through protest and strikes. The reaction of the manager was passive. He was not ready to listen to the needs of the labors. He showed an adamant behavior towards the labors. The reaction of labors was violent and it ultimately was able to bring about a change in the decision of the management. The executive manager had to finally to apologize to the union members. This was the final reaction of the manager (Battaly, Heather). Analysis of the behaviors of the actors While analyzing the behaviors of the actors the theory of pluralists can be put forward. The pluralist theory includes that the organizations comprises of individuals who form distinct sectional groups which has own area of interests, objectives and leadership. This theory can be applied when there are conflict between the management and the employees which results from the industrial and organizational factors (Ludwig, David). This comprises of not only the industrial disputes and strikes but also the entire range of whole range of opposing and divergent behaviors between the owners of the industry and the mangers on one side and the working people and their organization and union on the other side. The theory can be applied in this crisis (Ackers, Peter). The crisis occurred between the mangers and the worker unions. It has laid over-emphasis on the interest alone. It overlooked the relevance of the values and the cultures. The workers in this case show a common interest but they d o not share the same value. The pluralists theory is therefore applicable in this case. The interests and the values play an important role in uniting the groups and also in dividing them. However from the analysis of the situation this can be stated that it is not necessary for the identity of the group to be deep rooted on any particular common group interest as some particular common value a significant role in such construction (Acharya, Amitav). Conclusion Therefore from the above analysis and the study of the issue it can be stated that the industrial relations are an important segment of any industrial sectors. Loneliness in the Great Gatsby free essay sample

Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the unfortunate reality of loneliness consumes the lives of the majority of the characters. The time period portrayed in this novel, the 1920’s, had brought about several changes for people. It was highly common for large groups of people to join together for parties with endless drinking, dancing and celebrating. However, when the night was over and the festivities finished, most people were forced right back into their regular everyday lives feeling all alone. The wealthy class in society would continue living each and every day miserably lonely as long as they still maintained their materialistic lifestyle. Fitzgerald uses the characters in this book to demonstrate the constant loom of loneliness in the air and the hollowness, purposeless lives of the idle rich during the 1920’s. Jay Gatsby is constantly surrounded by thousands of people, yet his is one of the loneliest characters in this story. When he was younger and had returned from war, he was faced with the heart wrenching reality that his lover, Daisy, had left him. He then spends the rest of his life obsessing over earning Daisy again, spending many nights alone staring at the lone green light on the end of her dock. Gatsby is not accepted due to the fact he is among the â€Å"new rich† group in society so he does not fit in with those of East Egg and he is also highly mysterious; most people are unsure of his background and the source of his wealth. Gatsby has unlimited possessions, yet no one to share them with. Therefore, with his incredible wealth, Gatsby hosts these plentiful, posh parties at his monstrous mansion. Thousands of people show up, most total strangers to Gatsby, and stay into the wee hours of the morning, drunkenly living their lives away without the slightest care in the world. Gatsby uses his elaborate parties to build up his image among people and gain respect for himself, yet even amongst the thousands of guests at his own home, he spends his night â€Å"standing alone on the marble steps and looking from one group to another with approving eyes†(50). Even in the midst of everyone having fun and celebrating, Gatsby is not joining the crowd and having a good time, instead he is left all alone, like always. He uses these huge celebrations to try to deal with his loneliness, yet at the end of the night when the party comes to a close, Gatsby is right back to where he started. Once the dancing and celebrating is over and the party goers leave, Nick described the scene of Gatsby’s house by stating â€Å"a sudden emptiness seemed to flow now from the windows and the great doors, endowing with complete isolation the figure of the host, who stood on the porch, his hand held up in a formal gesture of farewell† 55. This idea represents Gatsby’s life; always left by himself in the end. He devotes his entire existence to earn Daisy back, yet he is never able to do so. Although Daisy and Gatsby have an affair with each other, Daisy always returns to Tom and Gatsby’s dream eventually dies out. During the closing of this story after Gatsby has died, Fitzgerald secures the idea of loneliness in Gatsby’s life when no one comes to his funeral. Nick has the minister waiting an extra half hour for people to arrive, but eventually Nick even realized â€Å"it wasn’t any use. Nobody came† (174). All the thousands of guests at his house for his parties and his several business partners, nobody had the decency to pay their last respects to Gatsby, for these people only cared for Gatsby’s wealth and possessions. Nick Carraway is always the observer, the messenger, the middle man. The people in his life count on him for favors and advice and judgment. He has nothing to live for, and no one to share his life with. The only person Nick spends considerable amounts of time with is Gatsby, who in turn uses him to become closer with Daisy. When Nick first arrived at one of the parties at Gatsby’s own house, he â€Å"slunk off in the direction of the cocktail table-the only place in the garden where a single man could linger without looking purposeless and alone†(42) when in fact purposeless and alone in the exact description of Nick’s life. He is highly ignorant with being single and alone but eventually attaches himself to Jordan Baker because he is simply dying for some kind of attention from anyone. His desperateness is obvious when he chooses to spend his time with Jordan, who is highly self-centered and untruthful. Towards the end of the story, Nick nearly forgot it was his thirtieth birthday, yet this was not anything to look forward to for thirty was simply â€Å"the promise of a decade of loneliness† (135). Fitzgerald uses this unmemorable birthday to further display the loneliness in Nick’s life. Throughout the book, Nick is all alone, whether he is with Tom and Myrtle, Daisy and Gatsby or at a party surrounded by thousands of guests. During the 1920’s, divorce was looked down upon, and therefore affairs outside ones marriage were unfortunately popular. While Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, George and Daisy are both left with similar feeling of loneliness. However, George and Daisy are in different social classes and Fitzgerald uses different symbols to portray their emptiness. For Daisy, she is well aware of her husband’s infidelity within their marriage yet she does not have the strength to leave even though the humiliation of everyone knowing their situation is extremely lonely in itself. Daisy is highly materialistic; her famous voice even described as being â€Å"full of money† (120). She craved attention and possessions to cover up her loneliness. She eventually has an affair herself with Gatsby yet this relationship is no longer the same for her and she ends up stuck with Tom again in the end. The life of George Wilson is juxtaposed with that of Daisy’s. Wilson owns a body shop where he slaves away fixing cars to earn his living. He lives in the valley of ashes, a highly run down section of town where all the dust and debris from throughout the city is collected. When Tom goes to visit the Wilsons, Nick notices the way George â€Å"went toward the little office mingling immediately with the cement color of the walls. A white ashen dust veiled his dark suit and his pale hair as it veiled everything in the vicinity- except his wife who moved closer to Tom† (26). The plain, simple colors associated with Wilson represented the way he just seemed to blend in with his surroundings, his loneliness and his lifestyle in the working class. His wife having an affair with Tom created a gap between George and Myrtle in their marriage, ultimately causing George to oftentimes be left alone in the doom and gloom of the valley of ashes, adding to his depression and isolation. Once Myrtle is killed by Daisy, everyone involved carries the sorrow experienced from this accident with them from this point on. Daisy will always be haunted by a deep guilt for secretly being the true murderer of Myrtle. Tom and George will experience increased loneliness dues to the relationship they both had with Myrtle. The marital affairs displayed throughout Fitzgerald’s story prove that infidelity within relationships ultimately leave the people involved more alone than ever in the end. Fitzgerald uses the characters in The Great Gatsby to demonstrate the loneliness experienced by all living in the 1920’s. He portrays the idea of the idle rich, upper class; although one is rich with possessions, he very well may be poor with those who actually care about him without him possessions. He proves money brings out the undesirable traits in the human population. Students will often lie to avoid or escape a task they dont want to do or to avoid consequences that come with not completing an assignment or homework. If a student comes from a punitive home or has only experienced school as a punitive environment, it is common for students to lie. They do this to avoid the kind of punishment or shaming they have experienced at home or in a general education classroom, such as a teacher screaming. Acquire something they want. It is recommended to look for patterns in the childs lying. Consider if the lying only occurs at specific times or in specific situations. When one has identified the function or purpose of the behavior, they can plan appropriate interventions.   12 Interventions and Tips Always model telling the truth and avoiding little white lies.In small groups, role-play with students on the value of telling the truth. This will take time and some patience. SPC Snuffy is not the only one who has consequences for his failure to report. He is part of a small team that affects a larger unit. Within his small team he could have soldiers under his care; he most likely has a non commissioned officer who is charged with his care. His soldiers look to him to be the middle man to help guide them day to day with his knowledge when given tasks. Accountability is very important in the Army. Accountability is taking responsibility for your actions and your items. By meaning what you say, saying what you mean, and doing what you say, when you say you will do it. By keeping track of all my items and equipment I can always be ready for anything that is needed of me by my country, my superiors, or other servicemen. Being accountable means being dependable. Where my country, my superiors and fellow servicemen can count on me in any situation. to know I will be there to do what is necessary. Taking responsibility for your own actions and equipment is what keeps things running smoothly. And keeps things from turning into utter chaos. Being in formation on time everyday is an prime example of accountability. Formation is where the Army takes accountability of everyone and to get important information out that needs to be dealt with. Without accountability there is no knowing of where everyone is or whats going on. Knowing where your equipment and personal effects are at all times is very important also. By not putting a lock on my wall locker,  I was not talking responsibility for my own items, and not doing what I was told to do by my superiors. I was not being responsible. Keeping my items locked and secured is very important now and in the future. As with keeping all sensitive items secured and accounted for later on. Keeping my wall locker locked, keeps accountability of all my items and teaches me to always maintain my equipment, my arms, and myself. Many things could have happened by me failing to adhere to my responsibilities.

But war is much more than just destruction and death; it’s about defending one’s country honor and improving individual’s way of life. Having a strong and powerful military is great for a nation for reason, it can defend, and it can boost the nations economy. Structurally, when different societies and cultural groups look at the military, they should ask this question, â€Å"What makes the military so intimidating to the point we despise it?† In my opinion, the military probably seems intimidating because of their nonstop technological advancements and using anthropologist to help better them understanding a different culture from their own and also go to war with an enemy without harming innocent civilians. Yes, it can be said as well as seen, that the American military spends billions of dollars each year creating and advancing their technology to â€Å"outgun† their enemy during times of war (Lutz). The billions of dollars that the American government uses towards military not alone creates weapons of war, it also provides jobs and keeps a steadiness in the business cycle (Lutz). Even though the government spends a very large amount of money on the military cultural groups tend to overlook the cultural intelligence that also being used to overcome and overpower the enemy. That’s what you have got to keep your eye on, facts like that, prog ress like that –and not a few German officers talking nonsense and a few scaremongers here making a fuss about nothing. Now you three young people just listen to this – and remember what I am telling you now.In twenty or thirty years’ time – let’s say in 1940 – you may be giving a little party like this – your son or daughter may be getting engaged – and I tell, by that time you’ll be living in a world that’ll have forgotten all these Capital versus Labour agitations and all these silly little war scares. There’ll be peace and prosperity and rapid progress everywhere – accept of course in Russia, which will always be behindhand naturally. ’ This tactic makes the spectators of the play feel involved with the play due to their knowledgeable, advantaged background.Tension is also secured throughout the play as each character holds significant connection with the suicide victim, Eva Smith, who rep resents the universal populace. By making Eva a representation rather than a real character the moral of the play is taken more literally. The character is directed with the use of pace and tension and presents each idea and enquiry without conjunction, by observing and exposing each statement from an individual’s account.This method slowly throws light on the core of Eva’s life and the real effect of classes on a wider population. Another devise used by the inspector is an aura of menacing, ominous gloom, with is brought on with the added value of his ability to manipulate and influence the rest of the people in conjunction with his line of enquiries, due to his dominance. This is presented at the end of Act one and further on during the play and an example of this is ‘ That’s what I asked myself tonight when I was looking at that dead girl.And then I said to myself â€Å"Well, we’ll try to understand why it had to happen? † And that’s why I’m here, and that’s why I’m not going until I know all that happened. Eva Smith lost her job with Birling and Company because the strike failed and they were determined not to have another one. At least she found another job- under what name I don’t know- in a big shop, and had to leave there because you were annoyed with yourself and passed the annoyance on to her. Now she had to try something else. So first she changed her name to Daisy Renton-‘The final devises of great importance are tension and timing. Chinese Empress Si Ling-Chi Discovered How to Make Silk About 2700-2640 B.C.E., the Chinese began making silk. According to Chinese tradition, the part-legendary emperor, Huang Di (alternately Wu-di or Huang Ti) invented the methods of raising silkworms and spinning silk thread. Huang Di, the Yellow Emperor, is also credited as the founder of the Chinese nation, creator of humanity, founder of religious Taoism, creator of writing, and inventor of the compass and the pottery wheel all foundations of culture in ancient China. The same tradition credits not Huang Di, but his wife Si Ling-Chi (also known as Xilingshi or Lei-tzu), with discovering silk-making itself, and also the weaving of silk thread into fabric. One legend claims that Xilingshi was in her garden when she picked some cocoons from a mulberry tree and accidentally dropped one into her hot tea. When she pulled it out, she found it unwound into one long filament. Then her husband built on this discovery, and developed methods for domesticating the silkworm and producing silk thread from the filaments processes that the Chinese were able to keep secret from the rest of the world for more than 2,000 years, creating a monopoly on silk fabric production. This monopoly led to a lucrative trade in silk fabric. The Silk Road is so named because it was the trading route from China to Rome, where silk cloth was one of the key trade items. Breaking the Silk Monopoly But another woman helped to break the silk monopoly. About 400 C.E., another Chinese princess, on her way to be married to a prince in India, is said to have smuggled some mulberry seeds and silkworm eggs in her headdress, allowing silk production in her new homeland. She wanted, the legend says, to have silk fabric easily available in her new land. It was then only a few more centuries until the secrets had been revealed to Byzantium, and in another century, silk production began in France, Spain, and Italy. In another legend, told by Procopius, monks smuggled Chinese silkworms to the Roman Empire. This broke the Chinese monopoly on silk production. Lady of the Silkworm For her discovery of the silk-making process, the earlier empress is known as  Xilingshi or  Si Ling-chi, or Lady of the Silkworm, and is often identified as a goddess of silk-making. The Facts The silkworm is a native to northern China.  It is the larva, or caterpillar, stage of a fuzzy moth (Bombyx). These caterpillars feed on mulberry leaves.  In spinning a cocoon to encase itself for its transformation, the silkworm exudes a thread from its mouth and winds this around its body.  Some of these cocoons are preserved by the silk growers to produce new eggs and new larva and thus more cocoons.  Most are boiled.  The process of boiling loosens the thread and kills the silkworm/moth.  The silk farmer unwinds the thread, often in a single very long piece of about 300 to about 800 meters or yards, and winds it onto a spool.  Then the silk thread is woven into a fabric, a warm and soft cloth.  The cloth takes dyes of many colors including bright hues.  The cloth is often woven with two or more threads twisted together for elasticity and strength. Archaeologists suggest that the Chinese were making silk cloth in the Longshan period, 3500 -  2000 BCE.

As the two reviewers took part in the procedure as independent assessors so we analysed the level of agreement between the two reviewers by using Kappa statistics (Rosner 1995) (Saunder 1994). To fulfil the requirement of both variables to be categorical we managed the datasets to change the peak flow from continuous variable to the categorical variable. Results Table 1 shows the results of paired t-test performed to compare the mean values of two measurements of peak expiratory flow measured at two different time period with some activities performed in between. Causes and Impacts of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic and generally progressive disorder of unknown origin which affects connective tissues. RA is commonly manifested by inflammation of the synovial membrane of joints, immobility and general fatigue (1). Concurrent and symmetric polyarticular inflammation, which is its first clinical symptom, initially involves the small joints in the hands and feet (2). RA knows no geographical or racial boundaries and may occur at any stage of life. Its prevalence and incidence increases with age (3). According to other studies, its global prevalence rate is reported as 1% and such rate is the same worldwide (2, 4). According to the World Health Organizations 2002 annual report, RA accounts for 0.8% of total years lived with disability. Besides, the mortality rate of people affected is twice than that of general population at the same age. Also, the rate of its prevalence is significantly increasing in the recent years (2, 5). Furthermore, women are more likely to develop such disease than men as 70% of the patients suffering from RA are women. The disease, which mostly occurs in the fourth and fifth decades of life, can disrupt normal daily activities (2, 6). RA may cause numerous physical complications among which chronic pain, fatigue, impaired mobility and limb deformities are the major ones (7). RA-induced complications are not limited to apparent limitations in mobility and activities of daily living; but obscure systemic effects of such disease can also lead to organ failure, death or serious health problems such as pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance and changes in self-image. Such complications can cause disabilities and permanent changes in the patients (8). The chronic nature of rheumatic diseases necessitates obtaining the required knowledge about the disease to make sound decisions for managing the health condition and developing a treatment plan tailored to the patients lifestyle. Fundamental objectives and strategies to deal with such diseases includesuppressing inflammation and autoimmune response, controlling pain, maintaining or improving joint mobility and functional status as well as increasing the patients’ awareness of the disease process (8). Encouraging patients to adopt correct and proper self-care behaviors is an important factor which contributes to successful management of the disease (9). Self-efficacy also seems extremely important in managing RA.Unpredictable courses of the disease and its varying activity can make the patients find their disease uncontrollable which, in its own turn, can decrease their self-efficacy in managing it (10). Self-efficacy is a form of self-confidence defined as ones belief in ones own ability to successfully organize and accomplish a particular task, behavior or any changes in cognitive status regardless of the underlying terms and conditions (11, 12). It is also a prerequisite for behavior change which affects the amount of efforts and level of performance (13). People with higher levels of self-efficacy hold a belief that they are able to control their life events effectively. Such perception and belief, which can affect their behaviors directly, create a standpoint for them different from that of people with poor self-efficacy (11). Hence, self-efficacy is a critical factorcontributing to the success and failure of people throughout their lives. Individuals’ perceptions of such sense, is the most powerful predictor of their ability to change risky behaviors. It also determines how they face obstacles and difficulties. The people with low self-efficacy are easily convinced that their attempts are useless so they quickly stop striving. However, those with high self-efficacy not only can remove the barriers by improving self-management skills and persistence, but they also can stand against problems and have more control over their affairs. Besides, reinforcing self-efficacy can result in maintaining and preserving health-promoting behaviors (14). Its significant role in the initiation and maintenance of healthy behaviors,in case of occurrence of any disease such as arthritis, asthma and diabetes mellitus occurs, has been frequently reported by researchers (15). Previous studies have shown that using structured education can improve it in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well (16). It is also reported that increased self-efficacy could improve self-care skills and behaviors in the patients with diabetes mellitus (17). The evidence show that it is essential to enable the patients to take care of themselves using scheduled training programs, which are based on patient-centered approaches, including patients’ active participation in improving their quality of life.It is of extreme importance due to several reasons such as priority of prevention to treatment, the chronicity of the disease, shorter hospital stay and spending recovery period at home as well as the problems of access to health care (18-20). Atak et al (2010) reported the significant effect of education and subgroups of regular exercise, choosing healthy diet and controlling complications of the disease on the mean of total self-efficacy scores in the patients with diabetes mellitus (21). Furthermore, the results of another study revealed that education could significantly affect perceived self-efficacy in the patients with arthritis with respect to their ability to exert control over pain; however, it was not significant in terms of shin-related exercises. Richard Wilhelm Wagner Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig, Germany, on May 22, 1813. His work was done throughout the romantic period. His father died soon after his birth, and in 1814 the family moved to Dresden. In 1822 Wagner entered Dresden's Kreuzschule. In 1828 he enrolled at the Nicolaischule in Leipzig, where he began lessons in harmony with the conductor named Christian Gottlieb Mà ¼ller. Over the next three years he composed several piano sonatas, overtures, and seven songs. Inspired by the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Weber and Shakespeare, Goethe, and Schiller, he taught himself piano and composition. He entered the University of Leipzig. There he lived wildly but he seriously paid attention to composition. His 'Symphony in C' was performed in Prague in 1832 and the following year it was played in Leipzig. The next six years he spent as a conductor at low class local theaters. In 1836 he married the actress Minna Planer, and in 1839, they left for Paris. Living with poor German artists, Wagner wrote musical journalism and did cut work. But in 1840 he completed â€Å"Rienzi†, his first major opera. It was successfully produced at Dresden in 1842 and resulted in his slot as musical director of the Saxon court. Here â€Å"The Flying Dutchman† was produced in 1843, and â€Å"Tannhà ¤user† was completed in 1845. These operas were much criticized, because they lacked the melodies of the popular operas. Wagner took part in the German political revolt of 1848-1849 and was forced to leave the country. For about ten years he lived in Zà ¼rich, Switzerland. In 1864 King Ludwig II of Bavaria invited him to continue his musical work in Munich. During the years in Munich, he completed â€Å"The Ring of the Nibelung† which was a series of operas based on old German myths that he had begun in Zà ¼rich. The opera house in Munich was too small for these great operas. Wagner suggested that a theater be built from his own designs. The king approved the project, and the outcome was the famous Wagnerian Festival Theater in Bayreuth, Bavaria.

‘Frankenstein’ was written in 1812 by a woman called Mary Shelley, at the age of 19, this shows that she is very intelligent because to write such a novel with so much understanding at a very young age shows that she was a dedicated female author who studied very hard. At first when I heard of the novel ‘Frankenstein’ I straight away thought without any doubt that it was a man who wrote this novel, because firstly it was a horror story so that instantly clicked in my mind to think that it was a man but I was very shocked to find out that the author of the novel was actually a women. This seemed very unusual to me because firstly at that time female authors were less well thought of than male authors and also even if female writers wrote books you would expect them to be all flowery and cosy type but for a women to write a novel with such imagination, creativity and devilish thoughts seemed very unusual with the basic fact that she was a women. This again showed that she was very intelligent. She also didn’t put her name on the book for 13 years, this was because of the fact that mentioned earlier about female writers being less thought of than male writers. I believe that she done this because during that time there might have been a lot of sexism and she believed that if she put her name on the book than a lot of people may not have bought it because she was a female and when she did put her name on the book I am sure that a lot of people were shocked to hear that it was written by a women. She probably played a vital part in raising the confidence of female writers and broke the deadlock for all female authors. The novel was about a young ambitious scientist who is keen to prove that he can create life. The scientists name is Victor Frankenstein. He accomplished his mission but all his dreams about this being were crushed when he realised what a monster he had created. Frankenstein ran away from the monster and left it to a life of loneliness. The monster learned how to talk and read and soon tracked down Victor Frankenstein. After being treated badly by humans the monster had one thing on his mind which was revenge. The novel starts with a letter from Robert Walton an explorer, to his sister. He is preparing to go on his way to his desired destination the North Pole. He is a very ambitious man and he wants to go on this expedition because no man has ever set foot there. Walton writes: â€Å"Never before imprinted by the foot of man† Walton also wants to be the man who discovers the route to the North Pole because at that time there was no route to this area of the world. This shows how desperate he was to go there and his ambitiousness. He trained his body for the expedition and Walton tells us: ‘I voluntarily endured cold, famine, thirst and of want of sleep’ This proves his determination and how serious he was about his venture.

The Palace of Versailles located approximately twelve miles outside Paris, France and is viewed as a place to showcase modern art. Much of the art that the palace has put on exhibitions over the years has brought a lot of controversy including the most recent one by Japanese artist Takashi Murakimi. Looking back at the 400 years of history at the Palace of Versailles it was once a home for the French royal family, a center for political power and today is a symbol of absolute monarchy. King Louis XIV viewed Versailles also as a showcase for the artists he supported. Louis and his successors were passionate about contemporary art and were constantly having parts of the palace demolished and rebuilt and redecorated by the newest and finest artists of their day. Versailles serves as a place where the newest ideas in art are showcased and served as a trendsetter for other palaces as well such as The Louvre; with it’s over the top decorations showing the monarchy’s wealth. Today, the palace is constantly having some of the currently most popular artists showcase their work at Versailles for the public to view. The most recent exhibit at the palace by Takashi Murakami ran from September 14, 2010 to December 12, 2010 has sparked a lot of controversy. This exhibition is called Murakami Versailles features 15 statues placed in different rooms of the palace. Murakami is a contemporary artist from Japan and has been billed as the new Andy Warhol, who is also Murakami’s mentor. The showcase features big, brightly colored cartoonish figures, flowers, globes and other inanimate objects. The style is far from the Baroque style of the palace, leaving most critics to deem the show inappropriate. Some groups visiting the Chateau complained that Murakami’s work has no place in rooms once residence to historical figures such as King Louis XIV, France’s Sun King and Marie Antoinette. Prince Charles-Emmanual de Bourbon-Parme, an heir of Louis XIV, tried to get the exhibit banned stating that it dishonored his family and their past but the courts dismissed his bid. One of his most tasteless pieces is a sculpture titled Hiropon, a large-breasted girl in a bikini who is skipping through a â€Å"rope† made of breast milk, this piece is not included in the exposition but it shows that Mr. Murakami is undeserving of Versailles. Muarakami spoke at a news conference and discussed the controversy. â€Å"When I hear such things, I say to myself that when a (sports) team scores a goal, there are always people who aren’t happy about it and who express that discontent†¦ The exhibit’s meant to be a sort of face-off between the Baroque period and postwar Japan, and I hope it will create in visitors a sort of shock, an aesthetic feeling† (Barchfield). Jean-Jacques Aillagon, president of the Chateau de Versailles defended the showcase saying he believes it is â€Å"‘his duty to open the palace to the artistic creation of our times’† (Barchfield). He also stated it gives the â€Å"visitors to historic monuments the chance to discover art that is less familiar to them† He added that the protests â€Å"come from far-right fundamentalists circles and from very conservative circles who see the museum as a reliquary of nostalgia of Ancient Regime France, of a France, that is turned in itself and hostile to modernity† (â€Å"Protesters†). Aillagon also stated â€Å"the palace and Murakami’s work are both joyful- the palace was not a place of penitence, not a place to be sad† (â€Å"Takashi Murakami's Versailles†). Versailles curator, Laurent Le Bon, stated â€Å"most of the visitors come for the chateau, not for Murakami, and are unfamiliar with contemporary art† (Von Uthmann). Several online petitions gathered thousands of names online even before the exhibition opened to the public. Two years ago a similar controversy occurred when Aillagon brought in contemporary American artist Jeff Koons. Call me a far right fundamentalist and conservative but I agree with all of the criticism surrounding this issue. This past November I got the privilege of traveling to Paris and visiting the Palace of Versailles. I had not heard anything about this exhibit occurring until getting to the Palace, walking into one of the first rooms and seeing it firsthand. I was appalled when seeing the first statue, my family and I thought the statues took a lot away from the beauty of the chateau. It also prevented us from seeing parts of the rooms and taking pictures of ceilings, walls, specific architecture that was being blocked from the statues. One visitor stated â€Å"[w]e are in a historic place, we want to see how history happened here, but every time you see a doll or a crazy monster it takes you completely out of the climax of the place† (â€Å"Takashi Murakami's Versailles†). Another stated, â€Å" it totally detracts from everything that’s here. It’s almost insulting to the palace and to visitors† (â€Å"Takashi Murakami's Versailles †) My least favorite was a piece called Tongari-Kun, also known as Mr. Pointy, inside one of the state rooms because it was so tall it blocked me from seeing the entire ceiling. Moreover, another piece called Flower Matango in the Hall of Mirrors was just awful in this room. The hall of mirrors is one of the most famous and beautiful rooms in the entire palace rich in beauty and history but it was all masked because of this statue. The sculpture of a bunch of bright, animated, ugly flowers. We could not step back and see the entire hall in its original beauty without seeing this statue smack in the center and the beauty of the mirrors was taken away because this statue was being reflected off of almost every one at that end of the hall. The statues were too brightly colored and too in your face from the mood of the rest of the palace. I have no personal pictures of the artwork because I, along with everyone else in my family, made sure Murakami’s art was out of every picture frame. I can understand why they have the exposition and the cultural exchange, the fact that they want to keep the tradition of showing the world modern art but unlike when the palace was being used for residence and power today the palace is an enormous historical landmark and is visited by over three million people per year. People do not go to the Parthenon in Greece or the Colosseum in Rome to see other artists or even have other artists intruding on its beauty. Likewise, these visitors do not go to see modern art but to see the old beauty of the palace and walk into a bit of history for a day. There are so many other museums in Paris that show modern art that the Palace of Versailles does not need to be one of them. The Palace is a piece of art on its own and does not need to have these controversial exhibits constantly demolishing its beauty. After seeing this overall I was disappointed with the exhibit and I wish I could go back another time when there will not be such a distraction.
